Teenager dies after getting into difficulty swimming in Co Donegal


A body has been found in the water following a search operation after three teenagers got into difficulty swimming in Co Donegal.

Gardaí and emergency services conducted a search and rescue operation off the coast of Buncrana this afternoon.

Gardaí in Donegal North were alerted by the Coast Guard to a report of three males in difficulty in the water at approximately 4pm.

Following extensive search, the body of a teenager has been found.

“The local coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course,” a spokesperson for the garda told the Irish Examiner.

Two teenagers were transferred to Letterkenny University Hospital, one of whom remains in a serious condition.

It is understood the three teenagers got into difficulty while swimming earlier this afternoon.

The alarm was raised by a member of the public that there were people in difficulty in the water near Buncrana.
